Reininghausplatz Graz

In order to create a platform for the diverse forms of urban life, the design for the new square is open in its use and yet defined in its spatial and atmospheric qualities. It enables markets and events, but also offers intimate spaces for everyday use.

Given its size (approx. 10.000m2), it is possible to reserve parts of the surface for plants: at the fringes of the square, perennial plantings will not only create intimate spaces but also soak up rainwater. Additionally, the square will be covered by the light canopies of trees, providing shade for hot summer days. In the open central space, a water element will attract adults and children alike.

Lend Hotel Graz

With the opening of the new Lend Hotel, an opportunity arose to improve conditions for the pedestrians and hotel guests by removing roads and dedicating the (additional) space to non-motorized transport.
The new square is part of an effort aiming to improve public space in the district of Lend in Graz. The square is one element in a sequence; together with newly planted trees in the immediate surroundings along the street the project offers a place to stay.

An important technical feature is the innovative rainwater management: all the surface water is directed into the underground drainage body where it is at the same time watering the trees. The trees evaporate the water in their canopies and actively cool down the temperatures on the square.
